A comprehensive visual arts education can increase learning capacity in children. To accomplish this requires the development and dissemination of innovative and exemplary curricular materials; opportunities for classroom and art specialist teachers, school administrators, and museum personnel to develop their leadership skills and engage in professional development opportunities; and on going research and development related to all areas and supported with continuous assessment.
The North Texas Institute for Educators in the Visual Arts embraces this philosophy and is dedicated to conducting activity in all three areas by developing partnerships and collaborations, utilizing technology, enhancing resources, and addressing population diversity.
Toward this end the North Texas Institute assists educators in (1) developing art curricula and programs in which students appreciate and understand meaning and ideas through the creation, study, interpretation and evaluation of art and works of art and that foster lifelong involvement in the visual arts, (2) developing and maintaining their leadership abilities, and (3) engaging in research and development activities related to both. The institute is committed to:
1. Strengthening partnerships and collaborations by:
- Facilitating communication among all participants.
- Sharing resources to develop programs and materials.
- Encouraging greater use of museum resources.
- Improving cooperation with key individuals at the state level.
2. Enhancing resources by:
- Expanding fund-raising initiatives.
- Preserving quality through planned growth.
- Training art specialists as leaders.
- Developing an exemplary pre-service program at UNT.
3. Addressing population diversity by:
- Incorporating multicultural perspectives in program offerings and materials.
- Involving a more diverse group in planning.
- Further diversifying participants.
4. Refining assessment efforts by:
- Measuring progress and effectiveness.
- Tracking students' test scores.
- Fostering a broad-based approach to measuring effectiveness.
5. Increasing understanding of comprehensive arts education through:
- Developing conceptual models and identifying examples.
- Publishing a variety of materials.
- Providing curriculum resources.
- Conducting research.
6. Transferring contemporary technology for the purpose of:
- Developing educational materials.
- Supporting instructional delivery.
